The Courteneers – Other Stage – Friday – 3.10pm
The Courteneers 2nd album was a massive disappointment. I was looking for their version of Morning Glory but all I got was another band who after making it successful couldn’t really find anything new to tell us. So it was with slight trepidation that I was waiting to see them.
Their first album however contained some great pop songs so it was these I was looking forward to hearing. I was at the Courteneers with 2 real fans so they were brimming with excitement. Friday afternoon was a scorcher and 3 pm at the Other stage was in the full afternoon baking sun. We even talked about seeing Bombay Bicycle Club at the John Peel to keep out of the sun. This would have been a major turnaround as the Courteneers were on the laminated list.
The Courteneers were not quite their usual outrageous selves according to the real fans, this was attributed to Liam Fray having sunstroke. Even so they played a robust set with all their hits to an adoring and large Other stage crowd.
Although the songs on the second album fail to deliver, live they were energetic and played at a far rockier clip. Maybe the production had been too contrived album wise but live they could belt them out like they wanted.
Third album time for the Courteneers will be make or break time for them one suspects. Again a good but not super fantastic show.
